Above all symbols, the true protagonist of the work must be the embrace.
An embrace that protects without being able to avert destiny. That expresses tenderness, but also sacrifice. That speaks of motherhood as a form of absolute love, capable of holding even that which it knows it will one day have to let go.
The intention was not for the Virgin to appear here as a distant or triumphant figure, but rather as a deeply human mother. A mother who loves, who senses what is to come, who suffers, and who, even so, finds the strength to embrace.
This painting captures the moments before loss, when we still hold in our arms that which we love most.
There is no need to depict Christ's suffering explicitly, for his Passion is already present in the distant cross, in the darkness of the sky, and in the light that resists fading.
To speak of sorrow without relinquishing beauty, of faith without the need for words, and of love as a sanctuary against the inevitable.
Because before the cross, there was an embrace. Before the pain, there was tenderness. And before the Passion, there was a mother holding her son in her arms.
